SPINNING A YARNIE
Within a few, short weeks of Knit & Natter being founded as a component of Woman Zone’s EVERYWOMAN project two years ago – it just grew, like a piece of knitting! Who knew how many secret knitters were out there! Well earlier this year, all Yarnie members were invited to come to one of their monthly Sunday meetings wearing some of their own knitted or crocheted garments. What a woolly fashion show that was! They were also invited to share their knitting stories – here they are so you can relate, be inspired or join up!

NOW WE ARE FIVE
Five years ago a small group of women got together at The Kitchen, a woman owned coffee shop in Woodstock, to discuss ways of sharing, understanding, growing and knowing each other. Last week a core group of the many hundreds of women who’ve been involved in WOMAN ZONE got together at Lelapa, a woman owned restaurant in Langa, to celebrate!

I AM WIRE WOMAN…
They designed me in 2016 and I was built by a team of wonderful wire workers at Street Wires. But I was conceived by a whole group of women to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Women’s March on August 9 1956 when 20,000 women walked to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest the Pass Laws and demand peace, justice and freedom.

SHARING SINDIWE
As a Living Legend, and prolific writer, Dr Sindiwe Magona is a national treasure. Her 80th birthday was honoured at the close of The Artscape Women’s Humanity Festival 2023 – the theme of which was appropriately Milestones: Celebrating, Supporting and Empowering Women of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Appropriate because as a woman, Sindiwe qualifies in all three of those categories – and her legacy is timeless.
